One of my favourite books of all time is A Canticle for Lebowitz by Walter M. Miller, Jr. I have been interested in this ancient RPG (released in 1997) for a long time because it has a similar setting to that book. The storyline is that the world has experienced a terrible nuclear war, and all the technology of the previous age has been lost. Your character is living in a huge underground fallout shelter called a vault. However, the vault's water purifier has broken, and you need to find a replacement part. I finally bought a used version for my Mac, after thinking about it on and off for a couple years. I finished this game by playing it nearly non-stop for three days, except attending class, cooking, and a few other tasks that I could not avoid. I enjoyed it immensely. One thing that was very well done is that nearly everything in the game can be completed in one of three ways: brute force, diplomacy or stealth. The easiest thing to do is to fight your way through the game, like I did, but I think it would be more rewarding to use your own brain and think your way around the obstacles. Amazingly enough, you could probably get through the entire thing with only firing a handful of shots. I have Fallout 2 as well, but I'm not allowing myself to play it until I get some work done.
