Despite a foreword from Joel Spolsky, I do not recommend this book. It attempts to deliver the "extra" knowledge that people with a fresh computer science degree need to become good software developers, but it focuses too much on the details. It also reads a bit like an advertisement for Microsoft's developer tools. A much better book with a similar focus is The Pragmatic Programmer. That said, there were good sections and advice here and there. The chapters titled "Working with Small Teams" and "Protecting Your Intellectual Property" were particularly good, and covered issues not discussed in other books.
